My mom.  A person who loved helping people.  Her job was a perfect fit for her.  She helped people with their Social Security.  She especially loved helping Veteran's at the hospital.  She received countless thank you notes from the people that she helped.  She kept them all.

She especially loved making her children's and later in life, her grandchildren's birthday cakes!  It was a lot of work but she made sure that they had what they wanted and made their day even more special.  

Seven years ago today, all of that came to an end.  Mom, heading for the job she loved, lost her life in a car accident.  

A couple of months after loosing her, my son was having a birthday.  Making sure that he had a cake, I went to a local store and purchased one.  He was sad.  It was the first time he had a cake not made by Grandma.  He kindly thanked me and then said that he wished I would have made one instead.  

Not being one to decorate cakes but always wanted to make my kids smile, I set out to do just that.  Mom's spirit and love of decorating inspired me to go forward.  Armed with Mom's beloved books, hours of study and hands on training, love and devotion from my husband and kids we officially opened our "doors" in June of 2011.

So I have to Thank You Mom for handing down your love, spirit, patients and talents for cake decorating.  I hope that I am making you proud.   

 

If you have ever had a cake consult with us, you know that we put our hearts into it.  We look at pictures, discuss ideas and make suggestions.  We spend hours to days just planning a cake!  We want all of our customers, from babies to brides, to be happy!

Last week, I received a note from a past bride.  The wedding was a year ago.  Their cake was pictured in my first blog post.  In the body of the letter it stated that they tried their top cake that they saved for their first anniversary.  (Oh boy!  We have all heard the horror stories about the brick in the freezer!)  This is what she said:

Okay, so that made me misty eyed but that was not what sent me over the edge!  The fact that they thought of us enough to send that sweet and touching card, was in itself enough to bring those tears but what else was included did me in.  It was a birth announcement and picture of their newborn baby daughter.  (Just typing this is very emotional for me!)  

So, on those days I wonder why I am spending so many long hours and sleepless nights (as so many of us bakers do!) I think about all of the thank you cards, wonderful reviews and now this birth announcement from this beautiful family just starting out.    

So, to the Schwartze family, thank you for those tears....of happiness.  

If you know me or follow Rocky Hill on facebook, then you probably already know how much I have enjoyed meeting so many new people as we travel down this sweet road!

This summer, we met a young couple that made us smile.  

We started with one idea and in the end had a completely different take.  Not only were they so open to different ideas, they actually had a "hands on" fondant session with us one evening.  The above is the result.  Three tiers with fondant "bark" and fondant lace on a hand made cake base provided by the couple.  The 20 dozen cupcakes adorned with camo style monogram toppers  sat upon hand made cupcake stands.  

The hall was decorated in a beautiful country setting.  Everything had such special and personal touches to it.  Absolutely gorgeous, but simple and full of love.    

Even more amazing was the email that she sent to us after it was over.

"The day was absolutely perfect! Many compliments on the cake. Your name was widespread there! 
Thanks again, the cake was great, we had just enough...maybe 3 cupcakes left."  M.S.


3 cupcakes!  Wow!  That was a lot of cake!


Our best wishes and many blessings to the happy couple.  You two will go far.

We have met many nice people because of our little hobby.  It is really uplifting for us to be a part of their lives and their special day. 

However, there are times when you are at a loss for words.  After meeting the father of the bride, it made me realize how fortunate my family and I are.  All I can say is "Thank You" Mr. Craig, for your service to our country.  I am so glad that you made it for your daughter's wedding.   

Mrs. Craig, it was a pleasure working with you and your son in-law.  I am looking forward to seeing the pictures of your cake with the flowers on it! 

To the newly married Mr. & Mrs. Davis, congratulations to you.  I hope your marriage will be blessed with many wonderful years.
